This policy explains what we (“we”, “us”), the makers of Signl, do with your information when you use Signl, our remote for Google TV, Android TV, Samsung, LG and Roku televisions.
We use TelemetryDeck to understand how our products are used — for example how many people finish setting up a TV, or how often a feature is opened. TelemetryDeck is built for privacy: it does not use the advertising identifier, does not track you across other apps or websites, and does not build a profile of you.
So that returning users are not counted twice, a one‑way hash derived from your device is sent instead of any identifier. It cannot be reversed, and it cannot be linked to you.
What is sent: the name of an event (such as “a TV was paired”), the app version, and general device information such as the model and operating system version.
Signl works with thousands of TV models we cannot all test. So when something fails — a TV cannot be found, paired or connected, a TV refuses a button, an app will not open, or a TV does not switch on — the same anonymous statistics also say which kind of TV it was and what went wrong: the TV’s brand and model number, its software version, which step or button failed, and a short error code. The same is sent if you use Report a problem. We use it only to find and fix problems with particular TV models.
It never includes your TV’s name, its network address or hardware address, what you watch, or anything you type. The app shows the reports it has sent under Diagnostics.
Signl keeps a technical log on your device — connection attempts, which steps succeeded, error messages. It stays on your phone. It is shown to you in the app, and it is only sent to us if you choose to share it when reporting a problem. We never collect it automatically.
Signl Pro is available as a yearly or monthly subscription, or as a one‑time Lifetime purchase. Payment, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled entirely by Apple, and you manage a subscription in your Apple Account settings. We never see your card details, billing address, or Apple Account. The app learns from Apple only whether Signl Pro is active on your device; we see purchases only in aggregate.
Our apps ask for as little as possible. When something is requested, this is why.
| Permission | Why | Where the data goes |
|---|---|---|
| Local network | To find your television on your Wi‑Fi and send it commands. Samsung, LG and Roku TVs don’t announce themselves, so while you are adding a TV, Signl briefly asks each address on your home network whether it is one. | Between your phone and devices on your own network. Nothing about your network, the devices on it, or your TV reaches us. |
| Microphone | Only while the microphone button is on — from when you tap or hold it until you stop, or pause — so you can search your television by voice. | To your television over your own network, or turned into text on your phone (see Speech Recognition). It is not recorded, not stored, and never reaches us. |
| Speech Recognition | To turn what you say into text and type it into a search box on your television — in YouTube or Netflix, say — or on televisions that do not accept voice from a phone. | Done on your iPhone where it supports that. On iPhones that do not, Apple’s speech service processes the audio under Apple’s privacy policy. The words are typed into your television and are never sent to us or stored. |
| Photos | Only the photo or video you pick to cast. Your library is not read or browsed. | Served from your phone to your television over your own network, and stopped when you close the screen. Nothing is uploaded. |
| Play on TV (share sheet) | Only the link you choose to share, so your TV can open it. | From your phone to your television over your own network. The link is not stored or sent to us. |
| Apple Watch | The button you press on your watch, passed to your iPhone so it can send it to your TV. | Between your watch, your iPhone and your TV. Nothing reaches us. |
Only to run and improve our products: to see which features matter, to find and fix bugs, and to decide what to build next. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, our lawful basis for processing anonymous usage statistics is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving our products. Because this data cannot identify you, the impact on your privacy is minimal. Where you share a diagnostic log with us, our basis is your consent, given by choosing to send it.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal data, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to your data protection authority.
In practice we hold nothing that identifies you, so in most cases there is no personal data to retrieve or delete. If you have shared a diagnostic log with us and would like it removed, email support@mavtech.ltd and we will delete it.
If you are in California: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and we have not done so in the preceding twelve months. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Our products are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Signl includes a “kids mode” that sets your television to a fixed volume and opens a destination you choose — it collects nothing, requires no account, and sends nothing about the child using it.
Anonymous usage statistics are kept only as long as they are useful for product decisions, and are held by TelemetryDeck on our behalf. Diagnostic logs you send are deleted once the issue is resolved. Data in transit is encrypted.
Since we hold no account data, there is no account of yours to be exposed if something goes wrong at our end.
Our service providers may process data in the European Union, the United Kingdom or the United States. Where personal data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. As above, the usage data we receive is not personally identifying.
We use a small number of providers, and only for the purposes described here.
| Provider | What for | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| TelemetryDeck | Anonymous usage statistics and TV problem reports | Event names, app version, device model and OS version, a non‑reversible hash; for TV problems, the TV’s brand, model, software version and an error code |
| Apple | App distribution and payments; speech recognition on iPhones that cannot do it on the device | Whatever Apple collects under its own privacy policy |
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Where a change materially affects you, we will say so in the app.
